AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT JOURNALIST
Carolyn Burt is a Social Media Manager and Audience Engagement Journalist based in Los Angeles, California. Since 2022 she has been an Audience Engagement Producer at Southern California News Group where she oversees the social media for 11 publications including the Orange County Register. She was a part of the L.A. Times Internship Class of 2022 where she worked on the Audience Engagement team. She aims to manage and shape the future of social media for news publications.
In 2024 she served on the Society of Professional Journalists Board as a Director at Large.
Prior to her time as an audience engagement specialist, she was one of 20 students selected to be a part of the Online News Association student newsroom for their convention where in addition to launching their TikTok, she orchestrated live events coverage on their social platforms. She was also selected as one of 10 student journalists to be a part of the SPJ News Team at #MediaFest22, a three-day journalism conference in Washington D.C. led by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Collegiate Press and the College Media Association.
Burt is a graduate of California State University, Northridge, where she received her Bachelor's degree in journalism. While at CSUN, she worked at the Daily Sundial. She first started at the publication as Social Media Editor, where she transformed its digital presence. The following semester she was brought on as Managing Editor where, in addition to overseeing the staff of the Daily Sundial, she took the initiative to launch and design the publication's weekly newsletter.
Before her time at the Daily Sundial, she was the Editor-in-Chief for the Corsair, Santa Monica College’s award-winning student publication. She credits her time at the Corsair as what transformed her from a Journalism Major to a Journalist.
