Achievable Fitness - About Me

Hollywood Blvd.JPG

I had always seen fitness as something unattainable. In my mind going to the gym was something already in shape people did to maintain their fitness.

That way of viewing changed for me in March of 2019.

What first initiated this journey was switching gyms because, in the most LA of reasoning, the parking at the one I had been a member at stressed me out. After that it was actually the gym’s Fitness Manager calling me (the day after I had told myself I’d go to the gym and, shockingly, didn’t end up going) to let me know that they wanted to offer me a free consultation with a personal trainer that got everything on track for me.

Now mama didn’t raise no fool, I knew this was a business tactic to try to get me to sign with a trainer, but I figured it was free and I’d be a fool to say no, right?

Well surprise surprise, I loved it.

After my first session, the gym already seemed a little less intimidating. I had someone to show me the ropes, make sure I was using good form, that I wasn’t going to do anything to injure my bad knee, but most importantly, I had someone to hold me accountable.

I realized that working with a trainer was the best way for me to achieve my goals with fitness.

Right off the bat I knew if I wanted to see change, I needed to be consistent. So on the recommendation of my trainer, I started going to the gym six days a week. It was a bit of a shock to the system at first, especially because up until this point I think the most times I’d ever gone to the gym in the same week was twice, but soon enough the results became apparent.

One month in I was already sleeping better, had more energy, and was in a happier mindset.

January 2019 and November 2020

While I hadn’t been talking about my new gym life with those around me, it didn’t take long before people started commenting about one other result, my weight loss.

Although it had been one of my original reasons for going to the gym, it was no longer my priority, nor was it the main point I wanted to talk about.

I quickly realized that if I wanted to change the narrative, I needed to talk about the change in my life.

Boxing has become one of my favorite workouts that I’ve found.

Boxing has become one of my favorite workouts that I’ve found.

I decided the way I wanted to break the ice was to just post about it on my social media. Not the weight loss, but my Fitness Journey. It was my way of updating those who were interested, and not bothering people who weren’t. Right away I received positive feedback from friends and family. On top of that people weren’t as hesitant to talk about me about fitness, in fact people started coming to me for advice. People were reaching out for workout routines, nutritional recipes I was using, athletic clothing brands I liked, fitness classes I had tried, and so on.

It made me wonder, why on earth were they coming to me?

I’m in no way and expert on the subject, what can I really offer?

What I landed on is something quite simple. Fitness can seem so daunting at the beginning, something out of reach, and often times one of the biggest struggles is being too nervous to ask for advice. So for someone like me, who has been very open and honest with friends about my struggles with it (I’m not embarrassed to admit cried to me 7th grade PE teacher over being “so slow” after being the last one to finish the mile, middle school was rough), to make the switch to prioritize their fitness, it finally seemed achievable.

So that brings us here, Achievable Fitness. My little corner of the internet where I can share about this new passion of mine for anyone who’s interested. I’ll be posting all sorts of things under the Fitness Umbrella. From Recipes, Workout Routines, Outdoor Exercises, Fitness Classes, and Updates on my own Journey. I hope you find what I have to say useful, and if anything it helps you to get started on your own journey.
