Resources to find Journalism Jobs
Whether you just graduated or are established in your career, it can be tough to search the web to find journalism jobs, especially those that meet your needs and interests. It’s also a challenge in itself to know where to start.
To help make job hunting a little less overwhelming, here’s a guide I’ve put together of different resources to help you find the journalism job of your dreams.
Substacks
There are three substacks I get weekly updates from where each includes a curated list of different journalism jobs.
Journalism Jobs and a photo of my dog
Mandy Hofmockel orchestrates this weekly newsletter that includes free job postings. In addition she offers some subscriber exclusive content of interviews with journalists and other resources. Mandy also curates a free calendar that has deadline dates for paid internships, fellowships and conferences.

West Coast Media Jobs
As a California girl, this substack is my personal favorite because it focuses on positions based in California (Categorized by region), Oregon and Washington. It also includes remote positions and internship, fellowship and freelance opportunities. It’s put together each week by Mallory Carra who in addition to being an award-winning journalist, is an adjunct professor at the USC Annenberg School of Journalism’s Annenberg Media Center.

Inside the Newsroom
This weekly substack is written by Daniel Levitt who has worked at The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and FiveThirtyEight. While this is primarily subscription-only content, you can either sign up for a 7-day free trial or refer a friend to get a free subscription.

Social Media
Even though it feels like it’s all over the place, X, formerly Twitter, can be a good resource to find some openings at publications. However, my tip for this isn’t to utilize the search function to see what journalism job openings people are posting about.
Instead, follow the editors for the beat/area of journalism at the organization you hope to work at. More often than not when they have openings they are going to take to social media to post about them.
Same goes for LinkedIn. Follow Editors and organizations to see what openings they have.
In addition, make sure your LinkedIn experience is up to date and post frequently to share your recent work. Use LinkedIn as an opportunity to hype yourself up! Post about if your out in the field, attending a work conference or receive a recognition.
Recruiters are always lurking on LinkedIn so sometimes it's not a matter of you searching for a position, it’s the position finding you!
Organizations Website
Finally, check the careers section of the news organization you want to work for.
Here are a few that come to mind:
Newspapers/Magazines/Digital:
Hearst Bay Area (San Francisco Chronicle)
Media News Group (Mercury News, OC Register)
PMC (Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, Variety)
